A Renter's Guide to Metro Atlanta & Macon
Our portfolio concentrates in two markets: metro Atlanta and the Macon area of Middle Georgia. Here's an honest, practical look at what renting in each feels like, written for families deciding where to search.
Southwest Atlanta
Neighborhoods like Cascade Heights and the communities along the Cascade Road corridor are classic residential Atlanta: brick ranches and bungalows, established trees, and a long-standing sense of community. You're inside the city, close to downtown jobs, the airport, and MARTA bus routes, while living on streets that feel residential rather than urban. For families using vouchers, southwest Atlanta has historically offered some of the city's best combination of house size and accessibility.
East Point
Just southwest of the city line, East Point is its own city with its own downtown, served by MARTA rail, a real advantage if anyone in the household commutes without a car. Housing stock leans toward single-family homes with yards. The airport-area job market (logistics, hospitality, warehousing) is minutes away, which is why East Point stays in steady demand with working families.
Decatur & DeKalb County
East of the city, the Decatur area and surrounding DeKalb County offer a mix of quiet residential streets and busy commercial corridors, with MARTA rail and bus lines threading through. Note for voucher holders: the City of Atlanta, DeKalb County, and other jurisdictions are served by different housing authorities. Where you rent determines which authority handles your file, and moving between them involves portability paperwork. Ask before you commit to a search area.
Covington & the eastern suburbs
About 35 miles east of Atlanta on I-20, Covington trades transit access for space: newer and larger homes, quieter streets, and a small-town square that shows up in half the film productions shot in Georgia. It suits households with a car that want more house for the voucher.
Macon
An hour and a half south on I-75, Macon is Middle Georgia's hub, a city with genuine history (its music heritage runs from Otis Redding to the Allman Brothers), a walkable downtown that has seen real reinvestment, and some of the most affordable family housing in the state. Homes that would be out of reach in metro Atlanta are attainable here, and the Macon Housing Authority runs its own voucher programs. For families open to relocating, Macon is the value play in our portfolio.
Choosing between them
- No car? Prioritize East Point, Decatur, and in-town southwest Atlanta for MARTA access.
- Need maximum space? Covington and Macon stretch a voucher furthest.
- Splitting the difference? Southwest Atlanta keeps you in the city with a real yard.
